Prepare to win

One strategy that most people adopt in their job search is to blast a resume out to everyone. However most people will likely see a 5%-10% call back ration on resumes sent this way. The problem is that there's no differentiation between each resume sent.

You have to prepare to win on each resume sent or company contacted. Tailor each resume and each plan of action to each individual company your targeting. First, you'll need to research each company and position that you're applying for.

The Internet
I always like to start with a Google search. Within the first few search results, you'll see most accolades and complaints against a company. If you find a long list of RipoffReport.com posts then you should be seriously questioning why you want to work.

Don't forget to look at their website. Once you have taken a good look, you should have a clear understanding of what's important to them. Also, look for profiles of key executives. What type of people are making the decisions of the company?

People In Your Network Who May Know Them
Check your Facebook and LinkedIn accounts to see who you know. If you know anyone there, ask them what they think. An insider's view is invaluable.

Their Employees
Use this one at your discretion. If it's a smaller company then you should expect that word will get back that you were calling in and asking questions. That may not be a bad thing as it will definitely show that you're willing to do the leg work. If you don;t know where to start, call a sales guy. They'll be happy to talk and will likely tell you more than you expect.

Now that you have done your homework on each company, customize each resume! Knowing what's most valuable to your potential employer allows you to highlight your best qualities that's most attractive them.
